melica ciliata - Gardening Tips
Summary The branching system of cultivated and wild popula-tions of the climbing grass Melica sarmentosa NEES is described on the basis of cultivated and field plant observation. Two types of axes are recognized, namely, ‘basal climbing axes’ and ‘distal climbing axes’. Melica decumbens is a short grass producing many flowering stems with spikelets (flowers) that usually have dark purple glumes (bracts) that contrast beautifully with the long silky hairs present.
Understanding the Context
Although not known in cultivation as yet, it is surely a grass worth trying in the garden. Melica bulbosa is a native species that grows 30–100 cm tall. It is a strongly tufted perennial with bulbous-based stems clustered on short rhi-zomes. The flowerhead is long and narrow with short, thick branches that are upward-pointing and pressed close to the stem axis.
